During the period from the 1960s to the 1980s, the majority of panel buildings were constructed in Belarus. Soviet architects had a standardized set of elements from which they 'assembled' these buildings: wall panels, windows of certain sizes, stairs, ceilings, and even decorative concrete panels such as balcony railings and porches. Architects were not only limited by technical requirements but also constrained in their choice of architectural appearance for the buildings. They had to address challenges similar to those presented in the installation. As a result, buildings were constructed using the same elements arranged in different combinations.
In this installation, I invite audience to assemble such a house themselves by solving a children's Panel Puzzle.
